Description

Ha!
This is not how it seems.
I was 'intrigued' by this couple seemingly apart from one another.
I followed them but never took another photo.
They were so ambiguous to me, old married couple, walking down the Venetian esplanade.
I watched, at every corner he gave a slight bow and indicated to her to go first.
Every turn and bridge he did this.
When finally they reached their house, he unlocked the door and gave her a kiss before she entered.
Nuf said.

First Impression for me is always the emotive, How does it make me feel and I feel "CURIOUS", I want to know more about the subjects, who they are? why they are so? what is the history ?

The image is not in itself a portrait of character, but a door that challenges you to open it.

In my opinion That is what the Artist Intended .. and has achieved that 100%

Technical Considerations.

Technical considerations are just guidelines to achieve a desired effect and for me are secondary, or of little consequence after the visual impact has been achieved. However I can say here that the combination of Exposure, Depth of Field and Focus have all merged together to create the effect of bringing the subjects to the visual forefront and create a powerful visual impact.

The focus is crisp and sharp and exposure almost perfect, as one can still see the details within the blacks. I can not find any obviously visible areas of over or under exposure.

The Depth of field keeps only the two main subjects in crisp focus, while the rest of the scene like ambient music in a restaurant, expresses the character and locale without being "in your face". More depth of field would have been distracting and reduced the impact and less would always have left one wondering what was out there.

The composition is well suited to the subject matter and I see it as a vertical layering. The bottom layer being the man and woman, the second layer being the greys of the buildings and the top layer the lights of the sky. However I do feel that the amount of the top layer is too much and the empty space is dwarfs the subjects. I might cropped out at least half of the white sky to bring out the subjects even more. But that is just a minor artistic preference.
