Jean d'Arc by jennystokes Jean d'Arc by jennystokes
This photo was taken in the Gers. France.

Jean d'arc was born in 1412 the daughter of a peasant family who were very religious.
At an early age it is said: that she heard voices and had visions.
At the time Charles (later Charles V11) was not King of France because his mother had said he was illegitimate.
The English King Henry V1 was already fighting wars in France, taking advantage of this news he decided to attack the French throne.
Several times Jean went to visit Charles until he finally agreed to give her a small army.
Already she had decided to dress up as a boy because she knew she would not be accepted amongst other men.
Eventually she won the Battle against the English at Orleans.
However, Bishops and Ministers at the time had heard about her visions.
She was eventually thrown into Prison, accused of witchcraft and heresy, which they were unable to prove even with torture.
Because she 'cross-dressed' this was also a violation and led to a Biblical Injunction.
She was put to death by fire in 1431
Canonized in 1920

Not much has changed, me thinks!!!!

... and wasn't it a Luxembourger who caught her and handed her over to those French allied with the English (the Burgundians)?

Just saying. :) Too many say the English captured her. Which I believe isn't the case. They "just" roasted her in the end. And what's English and what's French is pretty foggy in those 100 years.

Me thinks that history may be different - depends on who wrote it and why...

But agree - women often do the "dirty work" and then get dumped in the smelly stuff (or in this case - the firy stuff)....
