I'm planning to hitchhike the country for about 2-3 months. I'm not really into tourist attractions (though I always like visiting some), but do you have any preferences about where to go ?

NW India is incredible.............I will be interested to see how you feel about 'tourist attractions' you cannot avoid them in India.
The whole Country is one big Tourist attraction!

I'm always for the contact with people, I often travel economical style, not to say for free most of times, so of course I don't mean to avoid tourist attractions, rather I intend to feel that big attraction that is India hehehe

Only thing I can say is: smile all the time until your Face aches!
Be courteous, dress appropriately when entering a Temple.
Do not worry about anything, Indian people are kind and generous. If you get lost always ask 10 people, they tend to tell you the wrong way.....it's called 'not losing face!'
Do not drink water from plastic containers if the seal is broken.
OK to eat on the street (best food) as long as it is cooked.
Chai wallahs.....the best tea you will ever drink.
Just have fun

If you go to the NW best to fly to New Delhi.
You can then get a train further North to Uddaipur or Jaipur.
Also a small plane,
