Built between the 13th and 19thC
Southern Gothic Style.
Albi is sited on the River Tarn
This is where the Albigencian Crusade started against the Cathars (religious sect of people who were mercilessly killed by the Catholics.......I have read a lot about these people. They did not build Churches, were kind and gentle and kept themselves to themselves)
The Bishops of this region built a Palace here with the Cathedral and was almost a small Town in itself.
The discovery of 'woad' (the leaves of a plant) a blue dye made the Town very prosperous until the advent of Indigo. Woad dates back to the Neolithic period.
Albi is also the home Town of Toulouse-Lautrec.
