I'm a sucker for frogs and toads, this is a nice specimen.

I like the way you've composed the shot with both white and green negative space around the toad. You've given him room to breathe in the shot which is important.
It is an interesting choice of angle. We see his eye, but we're looking down toward him. Different from many who shoot from the side, front or top. He's centered horizontally and vertically, but it works with the diagonal

The focus on his side and eye is spot on. Nice and sharp, but the rest is blurred. The very shallow DOF emphasizes the texture of the skin and almost makes it the focal point rather than the eye. I wonder if a bit deeper DOF would make the shot stronger. It's one of the reasons I try to remember to bracket exposure with different apertures.

I have a fondness for frogs, so I would have been drawn to this shot in any case, but the positioning and composition make its a delightful picture. The hint of a story in the title helps a lot too.

Thanks for letting me dig deeper into your photo.

Alex.
